Methanation catalysts are produced by different methanation reactions. In essence, it is the reverse reaction of methane steam conversion. In principle, the nickel catalyst used in steam conversion can also promote the methanation reaction. As the methanation process is between decarbonization and compression, it is better to choose the catalyst with lower reaction temperature to avoid energy waste by repeatedly raising and lowering the temperature.

Therefore, methanation catalysts should have good low temperature activity; At the same time, due to the strict requirements of gas purification, methanation catalysts has high activity, high thermal stability, high mechanical strength, good anti toxicity and good selectivity.

The high activity is due to the extremely low residual carbon oxide content required by the process; High thermal stability can ensure that the methanation catalyst can withstand large temperature fluctuations; Good toxicity resistance can make the methanation catalysts resist the erosion of certain amount of toxicants such as sulfur, arsenic, chlorine and other impurities, maintain its activity well, and prevent toxicants from penetrating the bed to affect the next process; Good selectivity can promote the methanation and reduce the side reaction; High mechanical strength can ensure the integrity of the particles under abnormal conditions, and avoid crushing or pulverization.

The production and development of China's domestic methanation catalysts began in the 1960s. The first generation of products is J101 catalyst, which is adhesive catalyst. Due to its process, the strength, activity and stability of the modified catalyst are not ideal. In the 1970s, in order to cooperate with the introduction of new medium-sized units, the second generation products J105, J103H, and the later developed impregnated catalysts j106q and j106-2q were produced. These methanation catalysts extend the performance and service conditions of methanation catalysts from different perspectives, forming a relatively rich family of methanation catalysts in China.
