01 current situation of China's oil refining industry
In recent years, China's newly put into production, under construction / planned oil refining projects have reflected an obvious trend of base and large-scale. With the successive production of domestic local refineries and large-scale private refining and chemical projects, China's crude oil primary processing capacity increased by 3200 in 2019 × 104t/a, and the total national refining capacity reached 8.63 × 108t/a, and the excess capacity rose to about 1.2 × 108t/a. At present, China's oil refining industry is facing the huge challenges of eliminating backward production capacity, adjusting structure, intensifying competition and developing alternative energy, as well as the dual pressure of stricter environmental protection and accelerated quality upgrading, while facing the huge development space and opportunities brought by the new urbanization, economic transformation and upgrading, and the national strategy of the "belt and road".


02 progress and trend of oil refining technology

After more than 150 years of development, oil refining technology has formed a complete technical system. In recent years, around the requirements of low-quality heavy oil processing, continuous upgrading of safety and environmental protection, and strong demand for chemical raw materials, oil refining technology has made continuous progress in low-quality heavy oil processing, clean fuel production, and the transformation of oil refining to chemical industry.

The light processing technology of heavy oil and inferior oil has always been the focus of Technological Development in the oil refining industry, and it is also a worldwide problem. In recent years, the fluidized bed hydrogenation technology and suspended bed hydrogenation technology, which have stronger raw material adaptability, higher conversion rate and longer continuous operation time, have made breakthroughs. The fluidized bed residue hydrogenation technology refers to that the residue feed is mixed with hydrogen and enters from the bottom of the reactor, and the catalyst particles in the reactor are in boiling state with the help of internal and external circulation. The slurry bed residue hydrogenation technology is based on the reaction of vacuum residue distillate and fully dispersed catalyst / additive powder at high temperature and high pressure. The suspension bed hydrogenation technology has not been substantially applied and promoted in large-scale industry at home and abroad due to the low catalyst activity and difficult solid-liquid separation. Because high sulfur petroleum coke is limited in product sales, flexible coking technology has certain advantages over delayed coking technology in the processing of inferior residue.

In order to meet the increasing requirements of gasoline and diesel quality upgrading, many clean fuel production technologies have been developed at home and abroad. Gasoline mainly reduces sulfur, olefins and improves octane number, while diesel mainly reduces sulfur and improves cetane number. Typical clean oil technologies mainly include catalytic gasoline desulfurization technology, catalytic gasoline olefin reduction technology, and high octane clean gasoline component production technology. Alkylation, as one of the important technical means of high octane clean gasoline component production, has developed rapidly. Alkylated oil has the characteristics of high octane number, low vapor pressure, zero aromatics, ultra-low olefin and sulfur content, and is an ideal blending component of national VI gasoline.

In view of the current situation of excess refining capacity and fierce competition, increasing the production of high-quality and low-cost chemical raw materials has become the trend of transformation and upgrading of refining and chemical enterprises and high-quality development. The normal isomer separation technology uses full distillate naphtha, light naphtha, and reformed pentane oil as raw materials, and uses the liquid-phase simulated moving bed process to separate normal and isomeric alkanes, making efficient use of limited naphtha resources to achieve "aromatics are aromatics, olefins are olefins". The technology of deep catalytic cracking to produce more olefins uses straight run wax oil, hydrotreated residue or paraffin based residue as raw materials to produce ethylene and propylene.


03 main trends of refining catalyst development

The improvement of oil refining process will not make much progress for the mature oil refining industry. However, due to the different raw materials, products and device structures of each refinery, for the use of more targeted catalysts to obtain ideal products or chemical raw materials, selecting catalysts with better adaptability or selectivity can solve the key problems of different refineries and devices.

Due to the tasks of increasing the production of gasoline and chemical raw materials, the FCC device has many and complicated requirements for catalysts, so the upgrading of FCC catalysts in the world has not stopped. Its market share accounts for 40% of all refining catalysts in the world. China has become the second largest oil refining entity, with FCC processing capacity second only to the United States. As the main secondary processing device in the refinery, the improvement of its level is related to the benefits of the enterprise, so it is particularly important to timely develop low-cost and more targeted FCC catalysts.

The continuous expansion of the application scope of clean fuels has promoted the increase of the capacity of FCC raw material pretreatment and catalytic gasoline and diesel post-treatment device, resulting in the increasing consumption of hydrogenation catalysts, especially hydrotreating catalysts, worldwide, accounting for one-third of the global oil refining catalysts. Among them, the role of gasoline and diesel hydrotreating catalyst cannot be underestimated.

The process of clean fuels in China is accelerating, and the corresponding demand for catalysts will also increase in the future. The development of gasoline and diesel hydrotreating catalysts with higher activity, better selectivity, lower cost and longer service life suitable for China's gasoline and diesel structures has far-reaching significance for the quality upgrading of clean fuels.
